Significance & Philosophy

The Sharanam chant takes on a communal dimension unlike almost any other mantra. When millions chant in unison on the forest trek, the sound creates a collective field of devotion. Historically it also kept pilgrims together and alert in the tiger-inhabited Periyar forests.

Benefits of Chanting

  • The central chant of the world's largest annual pilgrimage
  • Chanting during the 41-day Mandala Vrata purifies body and mind
  • Grants protection on the pilgrimage trek
  • Represents complete surrender and dissolution of ego
  • Strengthens resolve and endurance during hardship

How to Chant

Chanted continuously during the Sabarimala trek and throughout the 41-day Mandala Vrata preparation. Can be chanted at any time by Ayyappa devotees. Wearing the Mala (tulsi or rudraksha garland) while chanting is traditional.
