Set amidst the dense forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats, Sabarimala is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world. The temple is unique for its principle of 'Tatvamasi' (Thou Art That), reminding every pilgrim of their own divinity.
The trek to Sabarimala is a test of devotion and physical endurance, traditionally undertaken through the 'Periyar path' or the swifter 'Pamba' route.
Pilgrimage to Sabarimala is not merely a visit; it is a spiritual transformation. Pilgrims observe 41 days of 'Mandala Vratham'—practising strict celibacy, vegetarianism, and wearing black or blue attire. This penance culminates in the 'Irumudi Kettu' (sacred bundle) which the pilgrim carries on their head to the shrine.
The Pathinettam Padi (18 steps) leading to the sanctum is the most sacred part of the temple. Each step represents a specific spiritual obstacle or human trait (like ego, anger, and desire) that the pilgrim must overcome. Only those with the Irumudi kettu are permitted to climb these golden steps.
Held on Jan 14. The appearance of the Makarajyothi star is the climax of the multi-month season.
The 41-day peak season starting in mid-November.
