Who is Lord Ayyappa?

Lord Ayyappa is the presiding deity of Sabarimala — the most visited pilgrimage site in the world after Hajj — and the most beloved deity of Kerala. He is Dharmasasta, the lord of dharma, and Manikandan, the jewel-necked one. Born of the union of Shiva and Vishnu (as Mohini), Ayyappa bridges the two great traditions of Shaivism and Vaishnavism.

The Sacred Story

When the demoness Mahishi — granted a boon that only a son born of both Shiva and Vishnu could slay her — terrorised the three worlds, the gods implored Vishnu who took the form of Mohini (the enchantress). Their union produced Ayyappa — Hariharaputra, son of both Hari and Hara. He was found by the King of Pandalam as a baby with a jewel around his neck and raised as a prince. After slaying Mahishi and performing miracles, he revealed his divine nature and ascended to Sabarimala, where he sits in eternal meditation.

Iconography & Symbolism

Ayyappa is depicted seated in Yogasana — the meditative posture with a yoga belt (Pattabandham) binding his knees. He holds a bow and arrow and wears a jewel at his throat (Manikandan). His expression is deeply meditative and serene. At Sabarimala he faces northeast — towards the Makara Jyothi star that appears on Makaravilakku night each January.
