Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is a shrine where the divine feminine takes center stage. Famous worldwide for the Attukal Pongala festival, it holds the Guinness World Record for the largest annual gathering of women for a single religious activity.
The Goddess here is worshipped as the supreme mother, the one who provides prosperity and protection to all her children.
The temple is built on the spot where the legendary heroine Kannagi (the protagonist of the Tamil epic Silappathikaram) is believed to have rested on her journey back to Kodungallur. The story of her transformation from a grieving wife to a powerful goddess of justice is at the heart of the temple\'s spiritual energy.
During the ten-day festival in February/March, millions of women gather in the streets of the capital city to cook a special offering (Pongala) in earthen pots. It is a breathtaking sight of faith, where the entire city becomes a massive hearth for the Goddess.
The festival culminates on the Magha Nakshatra in the month of Kumbham (Feb-Mar).
