Located on the banks of the Valapattanam River, Parassinikadavu Sreemuthappan Madappura is a temple that defies conventional Vedic rituals. It is dedicated to Sreemuthappan, believed to be the manifestation of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (Thiruvappana and Vellatom).
The temple is famous for its daily 'Muthappan Theyyam' performances, a ritualistic dance where the deity speaks to the devotees, offering solace and solutions to their problems.
One of the most remarkable features of this shrine is its inclusivity. People of all castes, creeds, and religions are welcome. Dogs, considered the sacred companion of Muthappan, roam freely and are respected within the temple premises. The temple provides free food (Annadhanam) and tea to all visitors throughout the day.
The offerings at Parassinikadavu are unconventional, including scorched fish and toddy (palm wine), reflecting the hunter-gatherer origins of the deity. The 'Muthappan Vellattom' performed in the mornings and evenings is a vibrant display of devotion, colors, and rhythm.
5:00 AM – 8:00 PM. Theyyam performances usually happen in the early morning and late evening.
No strict dress code, but modest attire is recommended. Men often remove shirts before entering the inner sanctum.
