Spirituality on the Banks of Nila

Nestled on the serene northern bank of the Bharathapuzha River (Nila), the Mundamuka Vadakke Sree Dharmasastha Temple is a historic jewel of Shoranur. Mentioned in the sacred 'Ayyappan Thottam Pattu,' it is revered as one of the 108 Ayyappa (Sastha) temples established in Kerala.

The temple offers a rare spiritual atmosphere where the sound of the flowing river blends with traditional Vedic chants.

Lord Sastha and His Consorts

Unlike the celibate form of Ayyappa in Sabarimala, the deity here is worshipped as 'Prabhasathyaka Samethanaya Sastha', accompanied by his consorts Prabha and Sathyaka. This 'Grihastha' (householder) form of the Lord is believed to bless devotees with domestic harmony and prosperity.

A Legacy of Resilience

The temple has a long history, having survived eras of regional conflict and even an attack by Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century. It was historically managed by five prominent Namboothiri families. The legendary social reformer V.T. Bhattathirippad once served as a priest here, adding to its cultural legacy.
