Vakratunda Mahakaya

Dedicated to Lord Ganesha
Ganapatya Shloka Traditional — chanted before all auspicious beginnings

About the Vakratunda Mahakaya

Vakratunda Mahakaya is the most widely recited Ganesha shloka in the Hindu tradition. It is chanted at the beginning of any auspicious work, before exams, at the start of a journey, and at the opening of any puja or ceremony. Lord Ganesha — the remover of obstacles — is invoked to ensure success and bless the endeavour.

The Mantra

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ। निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥
Vakratuṇḍa mahākāya sūryakoṭi samaprabha · nirvighnaṃ kuru me deva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā

Overall Meaning

O Lord Ganesha, of curved trunk and mighty body, whose radiance equals ten million suns — please remove all obstacles from all my endeavours, always.

Word-by-Word Translation

Vakratuṇḍa One with a curved trunk
Mahākāya Of immense body, great-bodied
Sūryakoṭi Ten million suns
Samaprabha Of equal radiance
Nirvighnam Without obstacles, free of impediments
Kuru Make, grant, cause to be
Me For me
Deva O divine one
Sarvakāryeṣu In all works, in all endeavours
Sarvadā Always, at all times

Significance & Philosophy

The description of Ganesha as having the radiance of ten million suns is significant — despite his unconventional form, Ganesha's inner radiance is incomparable. The prayer asks not for success per se, but for the removal of obstacles — the rest is left to divine will.

Benefits of Chanting

  • Removes obstacles from all new beginnings
  • Chanted before exams, interviews and journeys
  • Opens puja and ceremonies in all Hindu traditions
  • Grants focus and clarity of purpose
  • Ensures auspicious outcomes for new ventures

How to Chant

Chant once at the beginning of any auspicious work, puja, ceremony, or important task. Can be chanted multiple times on Ganesh Chaturthi or on Wednesdays, which are sacred to Lord Ganesha.
