Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

Dedicated to Lord Shiva
Shaiva Tryambakam Mantra Rig Veda 7.59.12 · Krishna Yajur Veda — Sri Rudram

About the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra — the Great Death-Conquering Mantra — is one of the oldest and most powerful mantras in the Vedic tradition. It is addressed to Tryambaka, Lord Shiva in his three-eyed form. Traditionally chanted for health, longevity, liberation from fear of death, and as protection during illness.

The Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्
Om tryambakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭi-vardhanam · urvārukam iva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya māmṛtāt

Overall Meaning

We worship the three-eyed Lord Shiva who is fragrant and who nourishes all beings. May He liberate us from the bondage of death — just as a ripe cucumber is severed naturally from its vine — and may He not withhold immortality from us.

Word-by-Word Translation

Tryambakam The three-eyed one — Lord Shiva
Yajāmahe We worship, we offer oblations
Sugandhim The sweet-smelling, the fragrant one
Puṣṭi-vardhanam Who nourishes and strengthens all beings
Urvārukam iva Like a ripe cucumber from the vine
Bandhanāt From bondage, from the binding of death
Mṛtyoḥ From death
Mukṣīya Liberate us, free us
Mā amṛtāt Do not withhold immortality from us

Significance & Philosophy

The simile of the ripe cucumber is profound. The prayer does not ask for an escape from death but for a natural, graceful release — just as a ripe fruit detaches from its vine when the time is right. It is not a prayer for immortality of the body but for liberation of the soul.

Benefits of Chanting

  • Protection from untimely death and serious illness
  • Traditionally chanted during illness for recovery
  • Liberation from fear of death
  • Grants longevity when chanted regularly
  • Powerful when performed as Havan (fire ritual)
  • Most auspicious on Mondays and Shivaratri

How to Chant

Chant 108 times on Mondays, during Shivaratri, or when a family member is ill. Most effective as a Havan with ghee offerings. Brahma Muhurta is the ideal time. Rudraksha mala is recommended.
