Who is Lord Murugan?

Lord Murugan — known as Kartikeya in the north, Skanda in the Vedas, and Subrahmanya in the south — is the son of Shiva and Parvati and the commander of the divine army. He is the eternal youth, the god of war and wisdom, wielding the Vel (divine spear) given by his mother Parvati. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala he is supremely beloved.

The Sacred Story

The demon Tarakasura could only be slain by a son of Shiva. Six divine sparks from Shiva's third eye fell into the Ganges, were carried to the Saravana lake, and were nursed by the six Krittika stars — forming six babies. Parvati embraced them all at once, merging them into one six-faced child: Shanmukha. Named Kartikeya, he led the divine army and slew Tarakasura. His mother then gave him the Vel — the divine spear of wisdom and light.

Iconography & Symbolism

Murugan is depicted as an eternally youthful deity — handsome and radiant, riding a peacock and holding the Vel. He has two or twelve arms. His six faces (Shanmukha) each look in a different direction — seeing and protecting all six directions simultaneously. The Vel is his most sacred symbol — it destroys ignorance as surely as it defeats demons.
